How to Access Affordable Therapy in Ontario Without Insurance

If you’re looking for affordable therapy in Ontario without insurance coverage, you’re not alone. Many people across Ontario don’t have extended health benefits, or find that their coverage runs out quickly, making ongoing therapy feel financially out of reach.

The good news is that there are several accessible, lower-cost therapy options in Ontario, including low-cost therapy with practicum therapists, sliding-scale offerings, and community-based services.

At A Journey Inward Therapy, we offer affordable online therapy across Ontario at $75/session, with additional pay-what-you-can options available in many cases based on need. Before becoming a therapist, I never knew low-cost therapy options existed and were actually accessible. In this article, I aim to provide a guide to accessing low-cost therapy in Ontario so that if you’re in need of support, you can get access to it without needing to jump through hoops.

Can You Access Therapy in Ontario Without Insurance?

YES! You do not need insurance to access therapy in Ontario.

While many people use workplace benefits, therapy is also available through:

  • Private-pay therapy (standard rates)

  • Sliding-scale offerings (adjusted based on income)

  • Low-cost therapy with practicum therapists

  • Community mental health organizations (often free, with waitlists)

For individuals without insurance and are experiencing financial stress, low-cost therapy is often the most accessible option for consistent, ongoing support and with little to no wait time.

What Is Low-Cost Therapy?

Low-cost therapy refers to reduced-fee counselling services designed to make mental health care more accessible.

At A Journey Inward Therapy:

  • Low-cost sessions are $75 per session

  • Therapy is provided by Practicum Therapists

  • All therapists are closely supervised by experienced and licensed clinicians

This model allows clients to receive high-quality, consistent care at a lower cost, without long wait times.

Are Practicum Therapists Qualified?

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: We not only look for Practicum Therapists who meet the following criteria, but who also already have prior experience providing mental health and crisis support, share our clinic’s values in providing culturally-responsive, LGBTQ2S+ affirming, and trauma-informed care, and have demonstrated in their interview process that they are therapists whom our staff would trust to provide therapy to those we know and care deeply about.

Practicum Therapists are:

  • Graduate-level counselling students or internationally trained professionals

  • Completing advanced clinical training

  • Supervised by Registered Psychotherapists licensed with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario

Sessions are regularly reviewed and supported, which means clients benefit from:

  • Thoughtful, attentive care

  • Up-to-date therapeutic approaches

  • Ongoing clinical oversight

For clients, this offers both affordability and quality care.

Who Is Low-Cost Therapy Best For?

Affordable therapy options can be especially helpful for:

  • Students and recent graduates

  • Individuals without insurance coverage

  • Freelancers or contract workers

  • Newcomers to Canada

  • Individuals experiencing financial stress

  • Anyone seeking ongoing support at a sustainable cost

Is Low-Cost Therapy Available Across Ontario?

Yes- we offer virtual low-cost therapy, which means it’s widely available across Ontario.

At A Journey Inward Therapy, sessions are offered online, making it easier to access care:

  • from home

  • without commuting

  • regardless of location within Ontario

This is especially helpful for individuals in smaller cities or areas with limited in-person services, as well as those with a tight schedule.
